Sharyn Rothstein grew up in the small, Banana-Republic- clad town
of Avon, CT. She escaped as soon as possible and graduated from
Vassar College with a degree in Sociology. And then she moved to
New York City, where she – happily – remains.
In the five years since graduating college, Sharyn’s
full-length and one acts plays have been workshopped and/or produced
off and off-off Broadway by the Ensemble Studio Theatre, New Georges,
3Graces Theatre Company, The Vital Theatre, Soho Think Tank, Manhattan
Theatre Source, Makor/92nd Street Y, as part of the New York International
Fringe Festival and at numerous theatres around New York by talented
young production companies. Her newest full length play, a Good
Farmer, premiered at the Bank Street Theatre in New York in October
of 2007, and was produced by the 2007 Lucille Lortel Award winning
3Graces Theatre Company. Her critically acclaimed play Neglect was
produced by the Journeymen Theatre Ensemble in Washington, D.C.
this past spring, following its New York premiere at the Ensemble
Studio Theatre in March of 2007.
Sharyn is a member of Youngblood, Ensemble Studio
Theatre’s collective for emerging playwrights under the age
of thirty. She is the winner of the Samuel French Short Play Contest
(Samuel French recently published her winning one-act RelationTrip),
and three of her short plays have been published in Smith &
Kraus’ 2005 and 2006 editions of The Best Ten Minute Plays
for 3 or More Actors. Her short play The Pickle Lady, produced this
year as part of the Metropolitan Playhouse’s East Village
Chronicles festival, will be published in the 2009 edition of Smith
& Kraus’ The Best Ten Minute Plays for 2 Actors. Sharyn
is also the recipient of the 3Graces Theatre Company’s 2007
Amazing Grace Award, for her commitment to sharing women’s
stories through theater.
In addition to playwriting, Sharyn writes live event
scripts for major non-profit organizations in the New York Metropolitan
area, and has written speeches for numerous New York notables and
celebrities. She is also the writer of Giddio, Inc.’s award-winning
Billy Brown audio-adventure series for children ages 3-9.
Sharyn recently completed her MFA in dramatic writing
at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she
was the recipient of the Television Department’s Award for
Excellence. She is currently being commissioned by 3 Graces Theatre
Company to write a musical adaptation of the Biblical story of Esther,
and is the recipient of a 2008 Ensemble Studio Theater/Sloan commission.
